THE HANDS THAT CREATE THE MAGIC

For this project, Ferrara invited musicians from across the spectrum of New Orleans music from funk to soul to blues and jazz to come to his studio and have their hands cast in plaster.  Ferrara asked each musician to “play their instrument” so he could capture the essence of their hands playing, that moment when the magic happens. The resulting sculpture that is 3d printed and mirror chrome painted is fluid and dynamic capturing their hands as they create the music that we all love.  Each pair of hands appears to be playing an instrument but there is no instrument, just the negative space where it would be. The viewers eye fills in the missing space creating a visual interaction that draws them in further. But this is only the beginning….with over 70 sets of musicians hands thus far the overall installation of Hands of Music can fill an entire gallery, room or wall of any size.  The installation is as dynamic as the individual components that make it up.  Picture a room or a wall filled with well-known New Orleans drummers like Stanton Moore and Herlin Riley, guitarists like Lil’ Freddie King and Jake Eckert, keyboard players like Ivan Neville, and David Torkanowsky, saxophonists like James Rivers and Roger Lewis, bass players like George Porter Jr. and Robert Mercurio, trombone players like Glen David Andrews or Craig Klein, singers like Irma Thomas and Jelly Joseph and trumpeters like Kermit Ruffins and Greg Davis. Their mirror chrome finished hands come  directly out of the wall creating a symphony of elegance, eloquence and movement.
